Biotope description: Putumayo River, also known as Ica, it is one of the most important rivers of Ecuador. In the lower reaches the river is navigable. High water period in Putumayo begins in October and ends in April and May. The river originates in the north-western part of Brazil, then it flows through the territory of Peru, Colombia and Ecuador. Putumayo is known for the fact that it serves as a kind of north-eastern border of Ecuador with Colombia. On the territory of the coast of Ecuador Putumayo covered mainly with rain forests. Since 1720 to this day, this unspoilt green area remains the main cause of the dispute between Ecuador and Colombia – the latter is constantly trying to prove that these forests belong to it.
