INFORMATION ABOUT BIOTOPE

Description of the area surrounding the biotope: The Musi River is located in South Sumatra, Indonesia. The river flows from the southwest to the northeast, from the Barisan ridge, which formed the Sumatra ridge, in Kepahiang, Bengkulu, to the Bangka strait, which formed the expansion of the South China Sea. Its length is about 750 kilometers, and it drains most of the province of South Sumatra. Flowing through Palembang, the capital of the province, it connects with several other rivers, including the Banyuasin River, forming a delta near the town of Sungsang. The river, deepened to a depth of about 6.5 meters, is navigable for large ships to Palembang, which is the site of large port facilities, used mainly for the export of oil, rubber and palm oil.

Description of the underwater landscape of the biotope: The river takes water from rains, abundant throughout the year, so the water is soft. The river flows down from the mountain slope, therefore it carries sand particles. It passes through the equatorial forests, so there is a huge amount of driftwood, fallen leaves and other organic residues.

Description of the parameters of the habitat: The water is clear, the average water temperature is 22°C, pH is 6, KH is 2, GH is 6.

List of fishes and invertebrates occurring in the nature biotope: Brachygobius doriae, Ambassis macracanthus, Anematichthys repasson, Pandaka rouxi, Osteochilus schlegelii, Pangio pulla, Corbicula javanicus.

List of plants found in the nature biotope: Microsorum pteropus, Limnophila sessiliflora, Vesicularia dubyana, Hygrophila polysperma, Crinum thaianum.

Threats to the ecology: The flat part of the Musi basin is an important agricultural area of the island, therefore pesticides flow into the river, which destroy insects and their larvae: an important component of fish nutrition. Fertilizers and navigation pollute the river, which negatively affects its inhabitants, therefore this biotope is in danger.
