INFORMATION ABOUT BIOTOPE
Description of the area surrounding the biotope: The suriname River is rising in the highlands at the junction of the Wilhelmina and Eilerts de Haan ranges. It flows northeastward about 480 km to empty into the Atlantic Ocean north of Paramaribo, the national capital. The river is obstructed by rapids in its upper course, where it is called the Gran River, and is dammed at Sintia, Adadien, and Awa. It is joined by the Pikien River at Djoemoe Asidonhopo, below which it is called the Suriname. The river was dammed at Afobaka to create the Professor Doctor Ingenieur W.J. van Blommestein Lake, Suriname’s largest lake. The river is surrounded by a virgin tropical forest with a wide variety of animals and plants.
Description of the underwater landscape of the biotope: Under the water we find sand, algae-covered stones that feed on many fish, broken tree trunks, branches and leaves that offer shelter to fry and other small fish. In high-flowing pieces the water is clean, while in the tracks with small flow is darker because fallen leaves release tannins and humic acids.
Description of the parameters of the habitat: The average temperature is 26 ° C.
List of fishes and invertebrates occurring in the nature biotope: At the Suriname river we can find many species of fish such as Anostomus anostomus, Apistogramma steindachneri, Corydoras melanistius, Geophagus surinamensis, Cleithracara maronii, Krobia guianensis, Nannostomus beckfordi, Pristella maxillaris, etc.
List of plants found in the nature biotope: I couldn’t find any plant information.
