INFORMATION ABOUT BIOTOPE
Description of the area surrounding the biotope: Vaupés River (Uaupés River) is a tributary of the Rio Negro in South America. It rises in the Guaviare Department of Colombia, flowing east through Guaviare and Vaupés Departments. It forms part of the international border between Colombia and the Amazonas state of Brazil. On the border it merges with the Papurí River and becomes known as the Uaupés. In 1847 an explorer saw a rapid which hurled its waves 12 or 15 metres (40 or 50 ft) in the air, “as if great subaqueous explosions were taking place. The river continues on east through the Alto Rio Negro Indigenous Territory until it flows into the Rio Negro at São Joaquim, Amazonas. Vaupés is a blackwater river.
Description of the underwater landscape of the biotope: It is one of the small puddles that flows near the city of Mitu. The water is blackwater. The floor has fine sand, dry leaves and driftwood. Aquatic plants and terrestrial plants appear in some parts.
Description of the parameters of the habitat: The water is blackwater. Humic and fulvic acids make the water acidic because of the high organic degradation. The pH can decrease to 3.5-4 in the dry period. It has an average temperature of 26-27 degrees, conductivity in the range of 0-20 microsiemens, very low GH and KH values.
List of fishes and invertebrates occurring in the nature biotope: Apistogramma cf. personata, Copella arnoldi, Rivulus xiphidius
List of plants found in the nature biotope: Tonina sp, Sagittaria subulata, Limnobium laevigatum, Eleocharis sp. Echinodorus sp.
Threats to the ecology: Agricultural activities and drug trafficking in the region cause pollution in forest areas and rivers. Urbanization and wastewater affect ecology.
This aquarium Apistogramma cf. attributed to personatas. The habitats of these beautiful creatures, which are hunted unconsciously and offered to the aquarium trade, are being destroyed and diminished day by day.
